S. dunnii (140)

Price: £4.50 (€5.40)

Quantity:

This species is normally a unifoliate (i.e. produces one large leaf up to 1 metre) though it can sometimes produce several leaves. Large numbers of flowers are produced over several months, colour varies between plants ranging from pink to deep red. S. dunnii is the only red species and it is from this that crosses have been made to bring the red pigment into modern varieties. When it first flowered at Kew in 1886 it was described by Hooker as 'this magnificent plant... quite the monarch of its beautiful genus'.
